Brewarrina, NSW - 10/03/25 – First People’s children in Brewarrina Shire will have the opportunity to build essential financial skills while deepening their cultural knowledge at the "Moolah! Bagul! Wulung!" Financial Literacy Program, a two-day school holiday camp designed to empower the next generation with money confidence.
Made possible through funding from the Foundation for Rural Regional and Remote - ANZ Seeds of Life grant program, and in partnership with Moogahlin Performing Arts, this initiative is a powerful step toward financial empowerment for First People’s youth.
The camp has been designed based on community feedback received during recent consultations, where parents, carers, and young people shared their priorities for families in Brewarrina Shire including saving, budgeting, money management, and practical skills like fundraising, tax file numbers (TFNs), and understanding payslips.
Most importantly, the community highlighted the need to create capability for youth to thrive in the modern world. "We shouldn't have to survive on luck" said Colin, a consultation participant.
“It’s important that our young people understand bagul (money) for their future and generations to come. We need to empower them for their sovereignty and self-determination. That’s why Moogahlin jumped to support this project when we were approached.” – Lily Shearer, Co-founder of Moogahlin and resident of Brewarrina.
Led by Lavinia Gibbs, Founder of To Rise Up, and Annette Rose, Founder of Kids Get Money, the program blends financial education with cultural storytelling and interactive workshops. Participants will explore budgeting, saving, and smart money choices in a way that connects deeply with their identity and community.
Lavinia Gibbs (Yuwaalaraay, formerly of Goodooga) said, "I am excited to see the camp coming to life with great support from Moogahlin and Brewarrina Shire Council. Seeing our communities come together to bring this valuable opportunity to our birralii-gal (children - YR, YY) is
inspiring."
