About Year 10

It’s a scary thought that our kids can be so close to independence, but not have any knowledge about real life money matters. Our Year 10 program will change their lives.

Module 1 - Get Money

You’ve just been paid for your first job. Yay! But with that extra money in the bank comes all sorts of new things to think about: payslips, tax, superannuation, bank accounts, interest… ahhh! We dive into the nitty gritty of what you need to know once you start earning money.

Lesson 1: Module Maths

We scaffold core Mathematics skills required for this module including proportional thinking, probability and compound interest.

Lesson 2: Choose a Job

Students dive into the intersection between talents, interests, skills, qualifications and reward.

Lesson 3: Get the Job

Getting the job you want needs preparation. In this lesson students investigate job awards, consider interview techniques and understand the important parts of a job offer. We also take a look at Entrepreneurship.

Lesson 4: Understanding payslips

Understanding payslips is a critical life skill - students look at the Award for their desired job, understanding leave and loading allowances as well as the basics of Taxation and Superannuation.

Lesson 5: Banks and Accounts

Earning money is fantastic, but learning how to make the most is even more important. We dive into the types of interest, savings accounts features and how/where to compare financial products.

Lesson 6: Intro to Super

Superannuation is an important financial asset - in this lesson we get into the finer detail of how superannuation works, fees, risk appetite and how to compare funds.

Lesson 7: Being a Great Employee

Whatever career students decide to pursue, there are some core skills they need to succeed. We look at key skills including IQ, EQ as well as key workplace behaviours.

Module 2: Manage Money

Having money is just the start. What you do with it is just as important! In this module we help you grow a healthy money mindset. From how to budget and save, to the importance of giving and the stock market. You’ll be money smart in no time!

Lesson 1: Module Maths

We scaffold core Mathematics skills required for this module including linear equations, proportional thinking, simple and compound interest.

Lesson 2: The Banking Systems

Students learn about the banking systems and how they work, both traditional and emerging (Blockchain/Crypto). In this lesson we also discuss the broader economy and inflation.

Lesson 3: Money Mindset

Students explore the psychology of money, instant and delayed gratification along with linking goal setting and action planning to good outcomes.

Lesson 4: Budgeting

In this lessons students deep dive into budgeting, the why and the how.

Lesson 5: Saving & Giving

With budgeting mastered, students move on to consider saving and giving. With a focus on why we should save, how to be good at it, where to save and having a mindset of kindness and giving.

Lesson 6: Intro to the Stock Market and Investing

In this lesson students will take their understanding of the stock market to a new level. Including how the stock market works, risk appetite, types of investment accounts and a refresher on the power of compound interest.

Lesson 7: Credit

Understanding the true cost of credit is a game changer. Students learn about the different types of credit and how to make smart decisions about use of credit including Buy Now Pay Later, Credit Cards, Personal Loans, Education Loans and Home Loans.

Module 3: Grow Money

Let’s find out how to make your money growwwwwww. You’ll put your new investing knowledge to the test in this module as we consider capitalism, sustainable capitalism, micro finance and climate change.

Lesson 1: Module Maths

We scaffold core Mathematics skills required for this module including data validity and interpolation/extrapolation and probability.

Lesson 2: Goal Setting

In this module all the lessons are connected. Students start by choosing a significant future dream/aspiration such as owning an investment property. They will research and document what, how much, by when.

Lesson 3: The Game - Week 1

Over the next 4 weeks students will be taking a gamified approach to forming their own thinking about investing to achieve their dreams/aspirations and whether their investing strategy should be concerned with sustainability.  This week, students learn about Capitalism and are invited to consider both sides - for and against and to form their own views.

Lesson 4: The Game - Week 2

This week students learn about Sustainable Capitalism and Micro Finance, again, being asked to form their own views.

Lesson 5: The Game - Week 3

In Week 3 we take a closer look at the impacts of Sustainable Capitalism and Micro Finance with Case Studies.

Lesson 6: The Game - Week 4

In Week 4, students will return to the significant future dream they mapped out in Lesson 2 and create their own personal investment plan to achieve that dream through a decision tree process. Students will choose an Exchange Traded Fund Portfolio that reflects their personal investing position following the last 3 weeks of learning.

Lesson 7: Class Debate

In Lesson 7, students will split into debating teams and prepare the first round of thinking into the topic based on the side of the debate they have chosen. Debate Topic: "Sustainable Investing is Critical to Reversing Climate Change." Teachers have the choice to spend additional time in future lessons to run the debate.
